I used to "imagine" songs in my childhood, taught myself some chords on the guitar, and eventually wrote a song for my highschool class when I was 18. But the motivation stopped soon after, maybe due to a lack of progress. In 1998, I decided to grab my guitar again and to write songs. "Sorry for you" was the start, written after an 8 years break. For whatever reasons it is still one of my favorites.

The original version was written in the late 90s in Kreuzlingen - but like so many times, songs develop and verses fall prey to new ideas. Just like a collage, they may include several layers or fragments of ideas and eventually turn into a new direction. This song particularly changed from an ego-perspective to a conversation with someone else that could be me or in fact another person. The line "You're the only one who can walk in your shoes so don't ask me to feel sorry for you" came up on the streets of Cairo in 2004.

Are you really so afraid of being all alone
Do you really have the time to play tricks
Don’t you ever feel the fever in your heart of stone
Do you still nibble on your fingertips

Do you really see no stars above your head
do you tell me you’re out of luck
Are you still unsatisfied
being attracted by what makes you stuck

You get down on your knees
always promising you’re gonna make your stand
You’re always in your own mind
twisting up the dust and the sand

How many horses have you ever ridden fast
How often have you tried to change your seat
How fast you’ve been transformed from present into past
trying to make your life less incomplete

Why is it better, what is it for
To lie here in tatters and crawl on the floor
You’re so confusing, what do you want
This ain’t amusing and it’s more than a song

I ain’t in trouble, I’m only out of sleep
You can see my scars but you hear me breathe
You`re the only one who can walk in your shoes
So don`t ask me to feel sorry, sorry for you

I’m standing at the doorway in the rain
watching your window second floor
And again I wonder what I was doing here
waiting till your light goes out

And later on after some time has passed
I turn around and get into my car
I turn the key and put the radio on
drivin’ away fast and far
I’d better keep on playing my guitar

Why is it better, what is it for
To lie here in tatters and crawl on the floor
You’re so confusing, what do you want
This ain’t amusing and it’s more than a song

I ain’t in trouble, I’m only out of sleep
You can see my scars but you hear me breathe
You`re the only one who can chase away your blues
So don`t ask me to feel sorry, sorry for you

Why is it better, what is it for
To lie here in tatters and crawl on the floor
You’re so confusing, what do you want
This ain’t amusing and it’s more than a song

I ain’t in trouble, I’m only out of sleep
You can see my scars but you hear me breathe
You`re the only one who has an option to choose
So don`t ask me to feel sorry, sorry for you
