The the first song that I have written "on" my guitar, while trying out some new chords. Written 1990 in Singen and performed with my high school class at our graduation ceremony. Added the final two stanzas in 2000 for our 10th anniversary party.
Tonight, tonight we’re crowded tight
We’ve expected this day
since we were six years of age
Now everyone of us has come
to receive his final exam
Some are glad others sad
We’ll leave this life behind us
and start to reach for a new task
New faces will fill our places
very soon you'll have forgotten our names
We’re going with hardly anyone knowing
where the journey will lead them to
You say we’re grown up
but strange feelings have filled us
that’s what you didn't tell us at school
We’ve laughed and cried
and though we all felt envy
I remember when we
danced and shook hands
singing songs in our school party night
We’re free to be
Soon our common minds
will become split lines
then we’re gone, some weak, some strong
maybe we’re running without seeing a light
maybe life’s running and we’re losing our sight
We’re going with hardly anyone knowing
where the journey will lead them to
You say we’re grown up
but strange feelings have filled us
that’s what you didn't tell us at school
that’s what you didn't tell us at school
Many years have gone since the birth of this song
we may have different names
but we’re still the same
the children of yore on the old schoolyard
joining again on this stage
And what apart from different hearts
will always tie and bind us
maybe unify us
'til the end are the past events
relentless as the rain
relentless as the rain
We’re going with hardly anyone knowing
where the journey will lead them to
You say we’re grown up
but strange feelings have filled us
that’s what you didn't tell us at school
that’s what you didn't tell us at school
that’s what you didn't tell us at school
